I'm a Geek Dad

As we're getting ready to roadtrip down to Florida in the next few weeks, I decide that our old camcorder is on it's last legs (or at least, it's old and the resolution sucks). I've been trying to figure out what exactly I want, and after much debate I picked up a Samsung miniDV unit this weekend.

Let me be the first to say Firewire rocks.

Controlled the whole damn thing from my machine. And exportred my test video to VCD in under 15 minutes. That included the software install.

The camcorder is almost the size of my digital camera and is half the size of my previous camcorder. Twice the resoltion and the sound is awesome.

Oh yeah, I think I'm going to be busy editing when I get back.

Let me get this straight, you get a MiniDV, you get Firewire, and then you take that high-speed, high-bandwidth, high-quality video and then convert to ... VideoCD?!

Dude, get a mac, even a cheap mac, with a DVD-R drive, and use iDVD to make yourself kick-ass DVDs for the family.

Sure, not a problem. Let me see, the cheapest Mac with a Superdrive is $1,700.00. For that price, I can buy eight DVD burners for my PC.

Yes, I'd love to burn it to DVD. But the family is just going to have to deal with VCD for now. I mean, we're not talking about high-class recording here. We're talking about Disney movies.

Have to remember who the audience is... :-)
