Methinks the same things are in store for Iraq. At least, I see that as being more likely than a western democracy. Indeed, Militant Islamic vigilantism (gangs of thugs enforcing militant morality) is running rampant in Iraq right now.

I think the same thing are in store for Iraq, as far as protests go (too many mullahs stirring the pot, similar to what Lenin did in Russia during the early 1900's). However with the deployment of the Internet, I don't think the notion of "liberty under Allah" is really going to fly with the "not-so-religious" crowd over there. They tried a Shariah nation and it just doesn't work unless you have 100% buy-in from the populace and allow for change and evolution.
BTW Dan, for someone as way out on the left as you are, why are you defending a truly religious government where the Koran is law, and law is interpreted by Mullahs who earn their positions through very un-democratic ways? Do you think that Islamic culture can't exist in a democracy? And do you really think every single person in a predomimantly Muslim country really bangs the Koran and wants Shariah law?
Now, do I seriously think the US government is going to hire three goons to kidnap their leaders and never see them again. Hell no. The BBC would cream in the shorts if that happened. One of the benefits of having an open and free press.
Also, are these the "gangs of thugs" in Iraq? The ones who fear democracy since it will mean the end of their existance?

Why do you think I'm defending such a government? Why do you think I believe anything you ascribe to me above? I think the exact opposite of what you've claimed I think.
And the gangs I referenced were not resisting Americans. They are punishing non-muslim Iraqi's. Reports have not been as prevelant the las coupla of weeks since some semblance of Police force has been established.

Because Dan, you have been posting on how Islamic cultures cannot exist in a Western-style democracy. Which is what most of the Iranian students have been protesting for. :-)

Uh, no. I have NOT been posting that. I think I've cited Iran on a few occasions as a place where moderate muslims are having success, recent events notwithstanding. Indeed, Turkey is a prime example of a muslim country that remains moderate and open. And more democratic than the US.
You've misunderstood something I've said. Is there a specific passage that led you to think this?
