An Evening with Cheap Trick

Cheap Trick paid a visit tonight to the Honeywell Center and seeing as how they have been one of those bands I've "always wanted to see", I had to make the investment and catch the show (with the added bonus of being able to get home 20 minutes after the show was over).

So, after some convincing from the wife, I bought two tickets for me and Emily and we head out to the show. Great show by CT and the opening band (who was some local group of guys that work at the theater) were absolutely awesome. These guys gave CT a run for their money (IMHO). Anyhow after the show, Emily wanted to get a pick. We scoured around the auditorium and found one on the stage that a State Trooper recovered for her.

After the show, we headed out (after meeting Brian from the CT board) and drove past the tour bus where there was your usual group of gaggling fans. Emily wanted to stop, so I found a closer parking spot and we went off with my camera and a copy of the Cheap Trick "Silver" DVD in tow (hey, I'm ALWAYS prepared). Here's what we got:

Emily got three autographs and was giddy the entire way home. I've had a hard time convincing her that even though she got all the autographs, it's still my DVD. Hopefully I've broadened her musical horizons just a bit.

Woogie, that's me in the white hat standing behind Robin and your daughter. I saw you taking the picture and thought, "I'll stand here and someone will see me in a picture and never know it's me, but it was you so now you know.

Real glad both you and her enjoyed the show and had the opportunity to meet those nice guys known as Cheap Trick. Had I known who you were I would've said hey. Maybe we'll see ya again at another show.

Hi, I was part of the CT stage crew for the Wabash show. The opening band is called Souviner (edit the spelling- it's almost 5 a.m.). None of them work for Honeywell but they have some good friends there. Very talented bunch of musicians! It's nice to see Honeywell let some local talent get some stage time. I've been a CT fan forever and was happy to be able to be involved as I grew up 4 blocks from H.C. Glad you got to meet them. Wonderful group of guys!

I thought they said they all worked at the Ford Theater? Oh well, I'll defintiely see them in a few months when Night Ranger comes around.

Yeah, we had a blast at the show and my daughter is still beaming about meeting the band. I've noticed that my Silver DVD is not where I left it last night (think it might have made its way into the living room) and I think I know which certain younge, new fan has it. ;-)

BTW, how did CT get booked in Wabash? Was it something made before the Aerosmith gig?

Adorable picture of your daughter with Tom!! :D
Thats so great you got to meet them! She'll remember it forever.

Thanks Bunny, I thought that was the best one. Just wish your namesake would have come out, it would have been nice to get all four of them. :-)

Congrats on getting the great photos and autographs after the show. It's a sign of a good parent to introduce their children to quality music. I agree with you - the opening act was a pleasant surprise.

Thanks, I knew I had two special girls when their favorite song was "Boat on the River" by Styx back about five years ago...

Hi Brian (and everyone else) -- My name is Troy Miller and I am the drummer for "Souvenirs".

I noticed that our longtime friend Dewayne had already posted here with a little info about us... and he's absolutely right. We don't work for Honeywell, but we do have some good friends and a long history there.

"Souvenirs" is not a regular 'working' band -- it's something that we put together every once in awhile, and usually for something large. The guys in the band are myself (Troy Miller) and Mark Olson (we have a regular acoustic show that we do - www.markandtroy.com - as well as a full blown rock-n-roll band called The Reach - www.reachrocks.com), plus John Rethlake and Eric Foust ("John & Eric", from Kokomo) and our buddy Russ Vavricka (currently working with Phil Hipskind). We've all played together here and there in various forms for a number of years, and it's fun when we get to do a big show like this!

The CT guys were great!... Bun E. in particular. As an avid drum collector myself, I found myself in a long one-on-one talk about all things "drum" much later in the evening -- turns out that he and I have some mutual friends as well, which was cool. SUPER nice guys!

Back to Souvenirs for a moment... you're right - we will be opening for Night Ranger on July 17 there at Honeywell -- grab us and introduce yourself!

Thanks for the kind words!

--Troy Miller

great pictures! So how was Tom? He seems so nice. Did he mingle for a little while? Your daughter seems so excited and happy. That has to make a dad smile.
baugh(boff)

Hi Troy, welcome to my little corner. Sorry I got confused about your involvement with the Center. I have to admit for how often you guys play, you guys are really tight (and I haven't seen someone play drums like you since college). ;-) I'll have my other daughter at the show for Night Ranger. From what Emily has told Hannah (the younger one) so far, she really excited to see you guys. I would have loved to talk drums with Bun E. He's one of those guys I'd like to buy a beer and just BS with about drums and music and crap.

Baugh, what makes me happy is that she not only had a memorable experience, but it has opened another avenue of music to her. Something other than "blond underage chick of the moment showing ton-o-clevage". And I seriously have to thank Tom, Robin, and Rick for being so damn nice and posing with her. Unfortunately the guys had to get out pretty quick to catch their flight, but I know that ten minutes of kindness made a huge impression on my daughter and on me as well. :-)

Tom was quite awesome. I always try to get an idea of how people will act based on how they act on stage and I (fortunately) am usually wrong. Got it wrong with Geoff Tate with Queensryche and with a few others.

BTW, she stole my Silver DVD this morning was jamming to "I Want You To Want Me" when I finally found her. :-)

Hi Brian, My name is Tim and I was at the concert too. My daughter was with me and her name is also Emily .I agree, Tom was great after the show and so was Robin. Rick was pretty good, funny as usual.

Hi Tim, glad you could visit. Who knows, I might see you at the Night Ranger show in a couple of months!
