Grossman Done

Just came out over the wires and on the Score, Rex Grossman tore his ACL during the touchdown run yesterday and is out for the season. I was hoping for the best, but when I saw him being carted to the bus yesterday; I knew it was bad.

Whatever conditioning the Bears are/aren't doing is apparently not working with the rash of leg injuries we have had. Time for the mighty Quinn (God help us).

Update: We signed Chad Hutchison today to run as backup to Quinn. I would have a hard time believing that Chad Hutchison is going to be more ready than Craig Krenzel. Hutchison might have NFL playing time but he's been cut by Dallas (thank God we didn't get him in his initial bidding years ago).

I really like Grossman. I thought the Bears waited too long to play him last year and he showed considerable poise this year, even playing from behing. He doesn't get rattled.

But, and maybe I remember incorrectly, wasn't Quinn the MVP of NFL - E? If I were a Bears fan I'd be excited to see what he can do. That excitement might not last beyong the first series this weekend, but until then . . .

I don't know about the NFL Europe stats, but I'm guessing there is a reason why he was third string on KC and 2nd string here. Something didn't impress either staff and bounced him to that spot. The interviews done today with the offense don't sound like a total glowing endorsement of Quinn.

I'm guessing the Eagles are literally going to throw everything at us to stop the run and force Quinn to pass into man-on-man coverage. If I was playing the Bears, that would be my game plan. Put Hugh Douglas on Thomas Jones the entire game and play both safeties within ten yards of the line of scrimmage. Take out the dink routes and make him go deep.

I'm hoping Lovie and the Offensive staff realizes this and are practicing deep routes over and over this week. If the WR corps has a clue (with Terrell that's not likely) they will stick around afterwards and run deep patterns well into the night. Hell, just script in five deep balls within the first ten plays to loosen them up.

But I don't know if that will happen. I don't know about Quinn's arm strength or accuracy. I just hope we make it through this week mostly injury free...

BTW, let me say this. This is David Terrell's week to shine. If he can grow up and get seperation on his routes and catch the damn ball, I will start changing my opinion of him. I'm hopeful, but not optimistic.
