How Can the Democratic Party Repair Itself?

#1. Ditch Terry McAuliffe.
#2. Abandon the loony fringe.
#3. Find centrist candidates and start grooming them for running in 2008 RIGHT NOW.
#4. Lock Hillary in a steamer trunk until 2020.

I find it odd that while the GOP has a candidate who kisses the ass of the most radical right-wing portions of the spectrum, you would call for the Democrats to come to the center?

Granted, I like the center, and wish the candidates were ALL in the center, but I think it's disingenous for a party that's polarizing itself quite nicely out to the fringe of the right to try and tell the Democrats not to do the same to their constituency.

You can say "Lock hillary in a trunk" but I bet you good money that a "Clinton/Clinton" ticket (nothing stops Bill from being VP) would swallow whole pretty much anyone the GOP put on the ticket in four years.

What "radical right-wing" portions are you talking about?

Abortion?
Nope, lots of people talking about the right to have an abortion?

Religion?
Of course he talks about God, but why was John Kerry in so many of those GD churches if he didn't feel the same way?

Seriously, the Republican party IS the centrist party of this country at this point.

WHAT?!

Bush who won't possibly allow potentially HUGE life-saving research to be done using stem cells because it offends his ultra-right Christian Fundamentalist support?

Bush who has stated he'd love to see Roe v. Wade go away?

Bush who believes that homosexuals are basically second-class citizens who shouldn't be in the military, nor should they be allowed the same rights as any other married couple, because for him to go there would completely throw his Fundy support to the wind?

If you think Bush is "centrist" I'd absolutely fucking HATE to see who think is "really right wing".

Fuck man, you drinking from Terry McAuliffe's Kool-Aid can? Bush banned Federal Funding for Embryonic Stem Cell Research. In fact, he didn't ban it, he said the government wouldnt fund new lines. If you notice, California just decided to spend a few billion to start a stem cell research grant. Doesn't sound too banned to me.

I am having a hard time agreeing with gay marriage and gays in the military since I personally think it opens a huge can of worms as far as polygamists and other more universal forms of "marriage" are brought into this country. I do think that people should be able to get partner benefits, and most companies are now offering this.

If you think Bush is "centrist" I'd absolutely fucking HATE to see who think is "really right wing".

Mostly isolationistic idiots like Par Buchanan who would like nothing more than to erect a 50' high fence around the US to keep foreigners out. Although I'm still friends with you obviously ;-)

he said the government wouldnt fund new lines.

No, actually, research with anything other than the existing lines is verboten.

"opening a can of worms"

It doesn't open shit for a can of worms. The real answer is easy: Get the gov't out of the "marriage" business entirely. Anyone can marry anyone they want because The State has nothing to do with it. However, if you and your wife, or you and your same-sex partner want to register as a domestic partnership AS WELL, that would be just fine, and you limit domestic partnerships to "two people, period".

But of course, that makes WAY too much sense to actually be used.

As for the military -- so what? the only people who could possibly care are the homophobes. Gay folks can fire a fucking gun just as easily as straight guys can. Shouldn't the predominant deterinistic factor for military service be "are you willing to die to protect your country?" and not "which types of body parts do you prefer to cozy up to in the dark?"

No, actually, research with anything other than the existing lines is verboten.

PLONK

I still have reservations about the whole gay marriage/serving in the military thing. I could be swayed with a legitimate argument, which so far I haven't heard. My views on gays in the military comes from people who have been IN the military and are definitely not homophobes. Again, my position is squishy on that... Do I find it to be a major issue? No, I honestly think global terrorism is the issue since without this country, none of this crap can exist.
