Busted

One word....Oops.

Wizbang has busted Dr. Hailey for trying to prove the now heavily discounted Bush National Guard documents as valid.

The Problems with Home Schooling

Hannah has been going to a home school environment for the past year and a half. And for various reasons, that will come to an end next Friday. Her teacher didn't get the enrollment she wanted (two people backed out at the last moment) and with the smaller class size she can't afford to keep teaching and make a living. So unfortunately Hannah will be starting public school on the 11th.

To get an idea of where the kids are, we asked both teachers to put down on paper what she's learned and what her new cllss is going to be doing. Here's the big problem. The subjects the 5th grade class is learning today is mostly stuff she learned about back in mid-4th grade. I had Hannah checkoff everything on the list that she already learned. The page was completely full of checkmarks.

Here's the big problem, I know she's smart. I know she's also going to get bored relearning things that she has already mastered. I'm off to talk to the school here shortly about what we will need to do to keep her interested. I don't want her to wait for the rest of the class since she's bright enough to catch on with harder things like Pre-Algebra in 5th grade.

When people ask me what the most crucial years of school are, I tell them everytime 3rd to 5th grade. Those years literally set out what groups you are going to learn with (the honors kids or the remedial group) which then dictates who you are going to be in class with most of the time. I know I was bored in science class since I usually knew more than the teacher.

Oh well, we'll see if they have the alternate program for "No Child Left Behind". Maybe it should be called "No Child Held Back".

Misleading Headlines

Techbargains has an ad today for Dell peripherals. Here's the Headline.

$50 off Dell Lasers

Apparently, sharks are not included in the discount.

Grossman Done

Just came out over the wires and on the Score, Rex Grossman tore his ACL during the touchdown run yesterday and is out for the season. I was hoping for the best, but when I saw him being carted to the bus yesterday; I knew it was bad.

Whatever conditioning the Bears are/aren't doing is apparently not working with the rash of leg injuries we have had. Time for the mighty Quinn (God help us).

Update: We signed Chad Hutchison today to run as backup to Quinn. I would have a hard time believing that Chad Hutchison is going to be more ready than Craig Krenzel. Hutchison might have NFL playing time but he's been cut by Dallas (thank God we didn't get him in his initial bidding years ago).

One of the worse called games

Is going on right now.

Illegal hit (essentially spearing) called on Todd McMillion when it was clear he hit with his shoulder.

Pass Interference waived off when the Vikings say the ball was tipped (when it clearly wasn't).

Offsides not called on the Vikings during the 2-point conversion.

I hate to bitch, but one bad call is expected. Two are just bad luck. Three involve several people in balck and white stripes not paying attention.

Too Close

Apparently scientists are calling to perserving DNA on the moon in case of a cataclysmic ending to the Earth. Here's why it's bad.

#1. If something really bad happens that actually wipes the Earth out (like an intergalactic causeway), 239,000 miles isn't going to be outside the "Danger Zone".

#2. If something really bad happens that doesn't wipe out the planet, but just a good chunk of the DNA-bearing creatures that live on it; most likely DNA will still survive and flourish in the aftermath. It's been done before.

If we're looking to leave a lasting impression on the universe, it's pretty easy to do these days. Build a big frigging building that can be easily seen from orbit well outside the Danger Area when the Sun goes Nova (think Pluto/Kupier Belt). Make it reflective as all heck. Then build another. And another. Think "thousand times redundant". At that point, you have significantly increase your odds of DNA surviving anything that is thrown at it.

To All Department Store Credit Card Divisions

From: Every single person on the planet.

Please stop putting inserts for (insert latest trendy/expensive perfume) in your monthly statements. When combined, the aroma is similar to a French Cat Box. I would normally shred your envelopes, but that means my shredder would bear that stench. And since you are required to mail me a statement every month, the only way I can avoid that stench is to tell my wife to NOT frequent your department store.

Of course she could pay cash, but the sales you have been running lately are for "Store Credit Card" purchases only. Maybe I'll just make the wifey open the statement each month from now on....

Occam's Razor

Re: Dan Rather

When given two explanations for a phenomenon, the simpler explanation is usually the more preferable and correct one.

Ouchie

Genesis made it home today. Unfortunately the parachute didn't deploy and it hit the ground at about 100mph. I was lucky to grab the impact on the Tivo, will post a video link when it appears later. It's pretty spectacular.

Someone needs to start a "Name the New Crater" contest.

150 Children Dead

And the lead story on Fox, MSNBC, and CNN is the damn Category 2 hurricane.

Only the BBC gets it right.

Fox Misses the Big Story

Shepard, it's not the god damn hurricane that's alarming. It's the Carnage in Russia that should be leading. Not because "If it bleeds, it leads" but because it is another battlefront on the War on Terror.

Thanks to LGF who pointed out that C-SPAN is providing non-stop coverage of the story from Russia and BBC news.

For those of you who think the war on terror should be handled in the courts

Think Again.

Thanks to Allah for putting this together along with a photo that tugs at your heart.

Delusions of Grandeur

Matthew Yglesias was in mortal danger while covering the RNC Convention on Wednesday.

Watching that speech from inside the hall, I was genuinely afraid at one or two points. The audience was so enthused by his frankly fascistic remarks that at any moment I thought the distinguished Senator might point up and say "see, there, right there is one of these unpatriotic liberal journalists busy abusing the freedoms our soldiers fight to protect -- he must be destroyed for the safety of the Republican" and that Matt Welch and I would need to fend for our lives against the onrushing hordes.

Or was it just cynicism...

Of course it didn't quite come to that, but I don't believe I've ever heard a more disgusting speech delivered in the English language. The fact that I couldn't see a single person on the floor who seemed to feel anything less than the utmost enthusiasm for that lunacy was, well, a bit disturbing.

"Icky...people getting behind ideas I don't support. Icky, Icky, Icky. I'm getting the vapors..."

What a turd. Matt, the only thing you were in danger from was being mocked by a couple of bloggers. Try not to file for victims reimbursement....

GMail Invites

I have six. If anyone wants one, just put a comment in and I'll shoot it over to you.

One caveat, you have to have read/commented on this site before today. Enjoy.

Update on Brieana Noe

Those of you who might read this blog remember my post about Brieana Noe who was brutally murdered by her own mother in order to prevent her father from gaining visitation and custody. Today the Judge on her case lowered her bail to $60,000 which means she only needs to come up with $6,000 in order to be free while she's on trial for a murder she already confessed to.

Brad, I don't know what to say. I hope no one volunteers up the cash and that she sits in jail.

I've Gotta Bitch-Slap TalkLeft Once Again

Last time it was for supporting the wonderful ideals of the Vietnamese Prison System. This time, it's for the asinine posts about Laura Bush. And no, this wasn't a response by some Dem troll, this was posted on their site.

Laura Bush's Speech

Laura Bush, Stepford wife. Why isn't anyone commenting on her fairly obvious botox job and not so obvious but probable lip filler.... It was fair game for Theresa Heinz Kerry. Is there a "don't ask, don't tell" policy going on?

Hey remember guys, it's all about the issues, right? Right??? Why bother bringing up what she actually said in her speech and just attack her appearance. Because they can't. They couldn't attack a school teacher and wife who knows her husband better than any of us. I swear that site is turning into the National Enquirer of politics....

But you know what, I guess I shouldn't expect much. Because that's all today's Democratic party is; a loose set of ideals wrapped around a flashy smile and a slogan. This isn't the party of FDR or Kennedy anymore...it's the party of the Springer, Jerry Springer.
