Proving that I'm still cooler than my kids

Emily: Dad, do you like Guns and Roses?

Me: Well, a bit, I've got an album on the laptop I think.

Emily: Do you have that song "Welcome to the Forest?"

Me: "Welcome to the Forest"???? I think you mean "Welcome to the Jungle".

Emily: Oh, OK.

Me: "Welcome to the Forest" makes me think of Bambi and other fuzzy woodland creatures. The song would be like "Fuzzy creatures that comes up to your knees, knees.....ooohhh wah, I think one just peed".

Mental Rewiring Week

Time for the that ever popular "We're not on Daylight Savings Time, but everyone else is, so now I have to figure out what the hell is going on with my schedule" week. This usually lasts about a week as I try to get the Citrix flavor of Outlook to figure out that I'm now on EST.

Judging from how Nathan was behaving this morning, it's going to be a long week.

"Tainted" Victory

Oh Jesus, here we go....

According to some Houston fans, the White Sox should not have the World Series trophy. Here are the top three reasons.

#1. The roof was open.
#2. Bad calls by the umps.
#3. Strike zone size by the umps.

Here's one thing I have to say to both Angels and Houston fans.

#1. As a White Sox fan, I have stated clearly even before the series began that it didn't matter if the damn roof was open or closed. If you honestly think you need a little more noise to win a game, then your team was more pathetic than I thought.
#2. Should we review each and every "controversial" call made by the umps during the regular season? Maybe in that case, Cleveland wins the AL Central and then someone else can win the World Series.
#3. You had what was probably the two best pitching staffs in the league in the World Series. Can you honestly tell me that future hall-of-famer Roger Clemens was getting a smaller strike zone than Mark Burhele? If so, you are in need of serious mental evaluation.

I understand that people want to put an asterisk on the White Sox victory. And to them, it doesn't matter that they had the best record in the AL, the best pitching staff in the AL, and what turned out to the be the best team in the entire league this year. If it makes you feel better to slap an asterisk on the victory, go for it. Maybe you will sleep better at night....

Next World Series

The next time the Sox are in the World Series, I am going to spend the first chance they have to win in Chicago. It completely sucks that I can't celebrate with anyone (except my best buddy Dennis who was screaming into his cell phone).

BTW, if anyone is watching Comcast Sports Net from Chicago, the bar they keep showing is 115 Bourbon Street and that's where we started on the night of Dennis' bachelor party.

World Champions

Hey Derek, now I know what you have felt like over the past few years.

Chicago White Sox, 2005 World Champions.

The only thing that sucks about the whole thing is I get to celebrate it alone. Kiddies and the wifey are in bed, so I get to scream on the inside.

Ideas for a Weekend Getaway

So, the Mrs. and I are looking to take a weekend off to fly to "insert town name here" and hope to get away from everything for a day or so. She's left it up to me to figure it out. I've got a credit on Delta for about $400, so it has to be somewhere close.

Ideas anyone? I've thought about NYC, but we're planning on going in about three weeks.

Cue Tom Petty

High Speed Internet Connection - $65
Laptop with dedicated connection to cable modem - $900

Spending over an hour waiting for Ticketwhacker's website while it tells me that my expected wait should be four minutes....

"The waiting is the hardest part....."

No, I don't have any belief that I will actually get tickets to the World Series. But there is always hope.

Go Avalanche!

Nice game tonight, good discussions, and too much food to believe. There's something to be said for watching a game from a skybox. Glad everyone who was able to come out did, especially with the snow and rain and crap.

Welcome To Denver

Who was the guy that said I couldn't go to Los Angeles in February? I'd like to have a small chat with them.... :-)

Anyhow, typical interesting landing into DIA (clouds, clouds, clouds, wheel touchdown, amazed look from passengers who are wondering "are we on the ground or did we just crash?"). Interesting conversation on the in-flight radio about a plane filling with smoke in the cabin. At the end it sounded like the captain was on his O2 mask, but then we got routed over to Denver approach and couldn't hear the rest.

Tonight I'm going to the Avalanche/Flames game with my coworkers...should be entertaining. :-)

Airport Blogging

Why is it that a puny airport like Fort Wayne International can have easy internet access but where I'm going to won't.

Anyhow, off to Denver and I'll blog more on that later.

Kolmar Reunion Pic

Slightly edited pic from last night (cropped, some brightness changes). Enjoy!

Prophecies and Psychoses

I've always thought that a prophecy is made up of two parts. The first part involves thinking of something you want to happen, the other part is making crap up to say it's going to happen. The rest of this post will revolve the second part....

Ive never been a social animal. When the party is going on, I'm off to the side wondering if the stereo has Double Dolby Noise Reduction with a port and starboard spontaneous noise generators. When the cliques form, I'm watching something stupid on TV or make nonsensical comments about the relevance between someones comments about their kids and a obscure reference Nixon made at a news conference in 1973.

So, back to me and my psychoses. I don't do well in groups. No it's not something that needs to be medicated, related, psychodated, philosphated, and spontaneously regenerated. It's just who I am. And tonight I'd like to thank the few people that made it much more bearable to be there (you know who you are, and I hope to hear from you soon).

Now on to what I was talking about earlier. Sometimes people can point to a song, a mix, or a genre and somehow relate it to their lives. Tonight through pure happenstance, it happened to me. But not in a bad or good way, just in a weird "what the hell is he talking about" way. It was more of a reverse, backwards, "something I would think of way..." Ruthie mentions her love U2, and I think back to "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Years Day" which had been blaring through my car just an hour earlier. I start to wonder about what I've done with my life and of course I think about "The Grand Illusion" which was on on the way into town.

Music has a way of working into our lives through obscure methods. Elaine and Terry were quite proud of their iPods, and I know several conversations revolved around music at one point or another. And we try to find meaning, inspiration, hope, and satisfaction in those tones that come through our ears.

So what's the relevance of all of this? Nothing really...mostly meek observations in the mind of a fat guy with too many kids at 12:42 in the morning. But it's also my way of saying it was nice to see everyone tonight. It was nice to spend time talking to people who I haven't spoken to in years about kids, work, and life. And it also shows we should keep in touch, at least those of you that aren't afraid of the Wal-Mart Stalker.

One more thing, increasingly stupid stories about yours truly can be found here ,here, and even here. And the couple of pictures taken tonight will be posted tomorrow because I left the camera cable at home...

Now you know...

To Buy Or Not To Buy

ALCS tickets go on sale tomorrow. I want to see if I can get a pair of tickets, but of course am sitting here wondering if I should since it's not won as of yet.

Serenity

Go see this movie.

I'm an obvious sci-fi fan, been one since I made my parents take me to Star Wars countless times in 1977. And while some of the shows have been a bit lame (i.e., the original Battlestar Galactica), as the years have gone by the writing and the effects have become endlessly better.

What this means of course as the genre becomes more popular, lots of stuff comes out. Some of it succeeds (i.e. the new Battlestar Galactica), and some of it fails (i.e. Firefly). Serenity was born from the ashes of Firefly, it has all the original characters flying the same ship in a nicely tied up movie which closes a few storylines and opens one or two more.

What does this mean? Well, I don't know if the movie will do well enough to garner enough support for a sequel, a rebirth of the series, or even a Holiday Special.

But as I said before, go and see this movie.
