He's Serious Now

tyserious.jpg

Tyler's team clinched second place last night in their league and will host their first (and Tyler's only due to vacation scheduling) playoff game on Thursday. Guess who's going to be working on hitting all week.... :-)

When The World Is Against Your Kid

And no, I'm not exaggerating....

Got a call tonight from Tyler's baseball coach about last night's activities. Here's a bit of a review.

Last night Tyler and his friend went to practice before Tyler's game. During practice, Tyler became sick, threw up a bit and said he didn't want to play. Now DeAnn and I have been through this before with Tyler and his numerous visits to the nurses office when he really wants to or doesn't want to do something. Tyler will get himself worked up to the point where he vomits. Old news, but it happens.

So last night, DeAnn gets to the game and finds out Tyler was sick. OK, no big deal, explain it to the coach (since he's not "sick" anymore and he's wanting to practice with his friend). Coach decides to bench him for the game. Not a problem, DeAnn and I support the decision and we stay to watch the game (so that Tyler doesn't get "rewarded" for his choice of behaviors). Several times during the game, Tyler decided he wanted to play and asked his coach if he could play. The answer was "No". His team won and at the end of the game, Tyler apologized to his coach and told him what happened (he really wanted to pitch, not going to happen his first year in the league).

Fast forward to today. Get a call from his coach stating that he has "concerns" about Tyler and his reaction speed at the plate. He's concerned that Tyler won't dive out of a pitch fast enough. OK, no big deal, we can take care of that, but I think you have other kids on the team who have had the same issue this year.

Then we get to the nitty gritty. Tyler ticked him off. Big time. So much that he wants him off the team so that "he never has another night like that again". I explain to him about Tyler's illness, but he doesn't seem concerned. He's called the league office and wants him off the team. For asking his coach to play.

If this was a league where kids tried out and were expected to play at an advanced level, I could understand. But this is Huntington County Baseball. A league where "everyone" is welcome regardless of skill sets.

Tyler has a game tomorrow night. My guess will be that he will be told he isn't on the team anymore (with only two weeks in the season left) and we'll be screwed to get him on another team. Season over.

All because my kid asked to play.

Update: Tyler's first hit was on Tuesday and the Zaptruder-like video (I was watching Nathan on the other side of the parking lot) is here.

Trying to get some sleep here!

Band-Less

Well, it happened again. This time, I was let go because the rest of the band thought "I had too much going on in my life" and my personal favorite quote...

Well, if we knew you had seven kids right from the bat, we might have looked elsewhere.

Too bad that was the first thing I told them during my tryout......

Apparently the singer and bassist were "paranoid with fear" that I wouldn't be able to make it to a show and that the occasional rescheduling of practice was "bringing the band down". I think there were other factors in "their decision" but hey, sh*t happens. :-)

The last straw was apparently that I wanted notice when they scheduled a show (you know "hey, I'm scheduling a show for this week, everything cool with that?"). But no, they wanted me to clear every weekend on the "possibility" that we might have a show in say, December 15th, six months from now. So instead of making plans, I need to keep things open every single weekend on the "possibility" we might have a show. I don't think I've ever been in a band that has required having every weekend open on the "possibility" of a show, not actually having one scheduled dammit.

DeAnn and I talked, and she's dead set that I just need to do my own thing, start a band right here around my music and have me lead the damn thing, which is what I'm going to do. I'm probably going to do some re-recording of stuff Dennis and I did a couple of years ago, a bit of tweaking on other things, etc....

I'm also working on getting a copy of the video from our last show together (which was a great show IMHO). When and if that shows up, I'll throw it on the site.

On Their Way....

Mom and Emily set off this morning for 10 days in London. I don't think it really set in that she was leaving until she was walking through security.

/sorry about the blurry picture, finding out that I really need to listen to the camera when it says it needs a flash.

More UPS Woes

Lynne has been having UPS problems.

Looks like we've got something in common.

Hint, Maumee, OH is about 80 miles from my house. UPS thought it would be better for it to see Oakland, CA, some 2,000 miles away.

Moved up about 400 spots in the Bears Season Ticket waiting line...which isn't too bad. While I don't think that pace will be duplicated, I probably will have season tickets in time for Nathan's High School graduation..

Bush Starts Preemptive Nuclear War On Rural Norwegians

From: The Corner

Record meteorite hit Norway

As Wednesday morning dawned, northern Norway was hit with an impact comparable to the atomic bomb used on Hiroshima.

At around 2:05 a.m. on Wednesday, residents of the northern part of Troms and the western areas of Finnmark could clearly see a ball of fire taking several seconds to travel across the sky.

You just know someone is going to blame it on (insert random US super secret program here)....

So Either Google Reads My Blog

Or I have a decent amount of luck/good timing...

gspread.jpg

It's most definitely a beta...some functions don't exist and "Import from .xls" gives you an occassional dumb look. At this point, I could only import from a .csv which means formats and formulas go buh-bye.

And yes, I went ahead and loaded my super-secret "ssh, don't tell anyone" budget spreadsheet which is much less dangerous since I've renamed/removed anything that wouldn't be considered innocouous.

And Lynne, no invites yet, but you are the first on the list!!!!

The Day Google Gets Hacked Hard....

...is probably long overdue.

Google annouced today a free (as in beer) spreadsheet program that will allow users to share data over the internet. And while it looks like a nice program, I have to wonder what's going to happen next.

When I first heard of this program, I had a single spreadsheet in mind, my monthly budget worksheet. I've been using this worksheet for the past two years and tend to get highly annoyed when I forget to copy the most recent version to whatever machine I'm travelling with. So this new offering looks quite tempting except if my info was ever hacked, it would list out almost every single liquidable financial account I have (minus account numbers).

So the question is do I give up security for conveinence? The data would most likely be useless to most people unless they really knew me well. But then again, it's a foothold to get more of my personal data more easily....probably thorugh social engineering. The odds are low...but still.

Conveinence or security? Which one would be best....

Accepted

I'm in. Classes start in late July....

UPDATE: Isn't there something prophetic on being accepted into a Christian University on June 6, 2006?

You Have To Wonder What "Spirited" Means....

At least when it comes to the debate over launching the Space Shuttle this July.

After a "spirited" two-day review, NASA managers today concluded the agency has reduced the threat of catastrophic damage from external tank foam and other debris to an acceptable level, a major milestone on the road to clearing the Discovery for launch July 1 on the second post-Columbia shuttle mission.

I have to wonder if this was the same "spirited" debate they had back in 1986 and in 2003.

I honstly think the timeline to mothball the shuttle should be tomorrow. Yeah, as in June 2, 2006. It would put a huge number of people out of work, but the shuttle over its lifetime has become a bloated white elephant that NO ONE wants to retire since it would be "thousands" of people out of work...which at this point is the ONLY reason that it is flying....
